UTA RN-to-MSN: when graduate clinicals start and who you need
UTA's RN-to-MSN routes fold an RN-BSN portion into the master's, and the preceptor search centers on the graduate clinical courses, which are the same ones the matching MSN track uses. On the online RN-to-MSN FNP, UTA says clinicals begin in your second year, a long runway if you use it.

The RN-to-MSN routes UTA publishes
UTA's 2026-27 catalog lists two nurse practitioner routes for RNs: the RN-to-MSN Family NP, 161 total hours, and the RN-to-MSN Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP fast track, 156, both counting the RN-BSN portion. UTA Online adds an RN-to-MSN FNP page and a general RN-to-MSN page whose courses come from the Nursing Education and Nursing Administration MSNs.
UTA's pages in our research give no time to finish for any RN-to-MSN route. What UTA Online does say, for the FNP route, is that clinicals begin “in your second year of the program.” For the AGACNP fast track we found the catalog page only, so check its format and timeline with the program before you plan.
Once you reach the graduate portion, the clinical courses are the MSN's own. UTA Online's RN-to-MSN pages show them under a NURSG prefix, and the RN-to-MSN FNP page lists the same 180, 180 and 360 clinical hours as the MSN FNP.
Graduate clinical courses and hours, by route
Each route's clinical courses already have a guide on this site, so the table only points you to the right one. Hours come from UTA Online's RN-to-MSN and MSN pages and, for AGACNP, UTA's 2020-21 course list.
| Route | Clinical courses | Hours | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| RN-to-MSN FNP | NURS 5337, NURS 5338, NURS 5660 | 180, 180 and 360: 720 in all | FNP preceptor guide |
| RN-to-MSN AGACNP | NURS 5354, NURS 5355, NURS 5640 | 720 for the MSN track, no split by course | AGACNP preceptor guide |
| Nursing Education courses | NURSG 5362 practicum, NURS 5360 | 135 preceptor hours; 45 logged hours | Teaching practicum |
| Nursing Administration courses | NURS 5339, NURS 5340 | 90 each; the MSN page adds 45 each in NURS 5341 and NURS 5342 | Management practicum |
The preceptor differs by route. The NP courses need a licensed provider with at least a year in the specialty role, the Education practicum needs someone working in nursing education, and the Administration hours take place in facilities where senior nurse administrators work. On the NP routes the handbook's hour rules apply in full: the minimum is met only with hands-on patient care, and hours are never waived.
The RN-BSN stretch: no preceptor, but a head start
Your RN-to-MSN starts with the RN-BSN portion. In UTA's standalone online RN-to-BSN, practice work happens at your workplace or in your community, and UTA says “you will not need to identify a specific preceptor.” Check your RN-to-MSN degree plan for which of those courses you take; RN-to-BSN practice experiences explains each one.
Use that stretch for the graduate search. UTA's General MSN FAQ says the preceptor search should begin when the program does, with a preceptor in place by the time you take Pharmacology. For an RN-to-MSN student that is a long runway, and the clinicians you work beside now are the first people to ask.
Asking matters more than it sounds. In a 2021 survey of 334 Texas NPs, 37.6% said they had never been asked to precept and 60% were not precepting at the time, while 32.8% said their employer restricted it. A year of working relationships before your first clinical course can turn a colleague into a preceptor, if their employer allows it.
Clearance, Exxat and admission on a two-level program
Two UTA documents time clinical clearance differently. The clearance policy wants compliance within 60 days of admission, while UTA's Exxat page says within 60 days of beginning the first graduate course, excluding the background check and drug screen. On an RN-to-MSN those dates can be far apart, so ask which applies to you rather than guessing.
Graduate students must buy Exxat on entry to the graduate nursing program, and UTA Online's RN-to-MSN FNP page names it as the Graduate Nursing clinical management system. Self-placement requests, timesheets and logbooks all run through it once your graduate courses begin.
For the AGACNP fast track, check the admission criteria on its own catalog page. The MSN AGACNP asks for two years of RN experience, and UTA Online's MSN page wants it in acute care within the last five years; our research did not find how that rule applies on the RN-to-MSN route.
Which states RN-to-MSN students can study from
UTA's state map has no separate RN-to-MSN line, and the lists it does have differ widely. RN-BSN covers every state plus DC except Tennessee, Washington and Wisconsin. The MSN nurse practitioner list names only Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, New Mexico, Texas and Virginia. The Nursing Education and Nursing Administration lists sit in between.
Because the NP routes end in UTA's NP clinical courses, plan on the seven-state list for them, and confirm with NursingSOA@uta.edu before you enroll from anywhere else. UTA's handbook sends students to that same mailbox before a move, a travel assignment or an out-of-state preceptor search, and UTA uses your MyMav mailing address to decide which state you are in. A move during the RN-BSN portion counts too, because the NP list is the one your graduate clinical courses will face.
Finding graduate sites outside the big Texas metros
DSHS reports that Texas NPs are more concentrated in counties that include major cities, so an RN outside Dallas–Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio or Austin has fewer local NPs to ask. The mid-size regions still have the site types a graduate clinical course needs. These examples come from state and federal data, not from any statement that they host UTA students.
- Lubbock and Amarillo: UMC Health System and Covenant Health; Community Health Center of Lubbock (12 sites in HRSA's data); Regence Health Network, the only FQHC in Potter and Randall counties.
- Tyler and Longview: UT Health East Texas and CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances; Wellness Pointe (29 sites in Gregg and Smith counties) and Family Circle of Care (14).
- Waco and Temple: Baylor Scott & White in Temple and Waco; Waco Family Medicine (19 sites in McLennan County and 1 in Temple), which also runs family-medicine residency teaching.
- Corpus Christi: CHRISTUS Spohn and Driscoll Children's Hospital; Amistad Community Health Center (8).
Where a system publishes student rules, follow them to the letter. CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances in Tyler, for one, asks students to line up the preceptor, confirm the school's agreement and have a resume ready before applying, and says outright that it discourages cold calling.
Timing the graduate search
Work back from your first graduate clinical course. UTA's online FAQ recommends starting to look 12 to 16 weeks before it, the General MSN answer sets the deadline at Pharmacology, and whichever lands first on your plan is the one to meet. On the FNP route, with clinicals in year two, that means a named preceptor during year one. The placement timeline covers the Exxat and clearance dates that follow.
Your employer can help, within limits. UTA allows clinical hours at your workplace if the setting fits the course, but not in your own department or under your current supervisor. On the Administration side, the RN-to-MSN page flags NURS 5339 with “location other than place of employment is preferred.” Clinicals at your employer has the rest.
The RN-BSN portion needs no preceptor, but it is the best time to find one for the graduate courses. Don't let a quiet first year become a rushed second.
Why RN-to-MSN students start with us early
The placement desk starts where your route does. For the FNP or AGACNP routes, we search near you for a preceptor and site that match the first graduate clinical course on your plan, and we can begin while you are still in the RN-BSN portion. For the Education or Administration courses, we look for a nurse educator or nurse leader who fits the practicum.
We help you assemble what UTA's reviewers see (the preceptor's CV, license verification, agreement forms and site details), and we're on call if a preceptor pulls out. UTA's reviewers make the approval call on each preceptor, site and agreement, and the request we help you build is shaped to answer their questions. See how it works for our process, or tell us your route and start term in the form below.
Questions UTA students ask
What does the NURSG prefix mean on UTA's RN-to-MSN pages?
UTA Online's RN-to-MSN pages list the graduate courses with a NURSG prefix, such as NURSG 5362 for the Nursing Education practicum. The catalog doesn't define NURSG and lists the same numbers under NURS. The RN-to-MSN FNP page gives the same clinical hours as the MSN, so treat a NURSG course as the MSN course with that number, and confirm on your schedule.
Why does UTA list 161 hours and 81 credits for the RN-to-MSN FNP?
The catalog's 161 total hours include the RN-BSN portion of the degree. UTA Online's RN-to-MSN FNP page lists 81 credit hours and doesn't explain the difference on the pages we reviewed. Ask admissions how your associate degree and any transfer credit apply, because the answer moves the date of your first graduate clinical course.
How long does UTA's RN-to-MSN take?
UTA's pages in our research give no finishing time for any RN-to-MSN route. For comparison, UTA Online quotes as few as 32 to 36 months for the MSN FNP starting from a BSN, and it says RN-to-MSN FNP clinicals begin in the second year of the program. Ask the program for a plan built on your own transfer credit.
Which RN license do UTA RN-to-MSN students need for clinicals?
The license must be unencumbered and must cover the state your clinical site is in. Texas takes part in the Nurse Licensure Compact, so for a Texas site either a Texas license or a compact multistate license is enough. Outside Texas, you pay for that state's license yourself unless the state is in the compact and your license is multistate. UTA verifies licenses through NURSYS.
What happens if I can't find a preceptor for my first graduate clinical?
UTA offers placement help to graduate students it describes as “experiencing difficulty,” under a policy kept in Exxat. The clearance policy shows what a failed placement can cost: when a clinical agency won't take a student who has a vaccine exemption, the request fails and the course shifts to the following semester. Raise problems early with your Clinical Coordinator.
