Exxat MyRequest: submitting your UTA self-placement request
MyRequest is how the preceptor and site you have lined up reach UTA for approval. You find it in Exxat under Dashboard, then Clinical coursework, and a course's request only appears within 12 months of that course's start. Each course also has a Wishlist close date and a minimum and maximum number of requests, which UTA sets per course and does not publish on its public site.

What MyRequest is and where it lives
At UTA the student makes the first move: the program pages ask you to find a preceptor who fits your program's requirements, and MyRequest is the self-placement request that carries your choice into UTA's review.
To reach it, log in at steps.exxat.com with your UTA email through UTA single sign-on, open the Dashboard, then go to Clinical coursework. Requests are handled course by course, so each clinical course ahead of you gets its own request, its own Wishlist and its own close date.
Before you start, open the Resources tile. UTA's online FNP page says recruiting guidelines, “forms to use, and other resources” sit in Exxat, and UTA's Exxat page lists preceptor guidelines and self-placement instructions there. When your course's request appears
A clinical course does not show up in MyRequest until you are within 12 months of its start. UTA's Exxat page gives three reasons a course can be missing, and where to go for each.

The 12-month window is a display rule, not a start date for your search. UTA's General MSN FAQ wants the hunt to begin the moment the program does, with a preceptor secured by the time you reach Pharmacology; its online FAQ gives 12 to 16 weeks before clinicals as the latest sensible start. The earlier date is the safer one to plan around, and the full order of deadlines is on the placement timeline page.
The Wishlist and its close date
Requests are made through a course Wishlist. The Exxat MyRequest guide UTA hosts shows each course with a “Wishlist closes…” date, and dates display in the school's time zone. If you live in a different time zone from UTA's, read the deadline on UTA's clock, not yours.
UTA does not publish Wishlist close dates for its courses anywhere public. The place to see yours is the course's MyRequest once it appears, so check it as soon as the course shows up, and ask your clinical coordinator if no date is showing.
What happens if you miss it isn't spelled out on UTA's public pages either. One 2024 FNP guidelines document, seen only in a brief excerpt, ties a missed pre-semester deadline to moving the course to the next start date. Treat that as a warning rather than a confirmed rule, and ask your coordinator how your course handles it.
Find your course's Wishlist close date the day its MyRequest appears. It is set inside Exxat, not published on UTA's website.
Minimum and maximum requests
The same guide says the school sets a minimum and a maximum number of requests for each course. UTA's numbers are not public and are set course by course, so read them off each course's MyRequest.
Both limits change how you search. A minimum above one means you need more than one workable preceptor and site ready before you submit. A maximum means every slot should go to a preceptor who has already said yes and a site that can host you, not a name you are still waiting to hear from.
If you're unsure how your course counts requests, or whether a backup option is worth a slot, ask your clinical coordinator before the Wishlist closes, not after.
What to have ready before you submit
UTA's public guide doesn't list the request's fields. Its rules do make plain what the people approving your request need to judge, so have each of these settled first.
- A qualifying preceptor. Your preceptor needs at least twelve months in the specialty role plus a provider license that is current, with no encumbrances. Their type must also appear on your course's list of acceptable categories, which UTA does not post publicly. See preceptor requirements.
- A site that fits the course. The catalog describes each clinical course's setting, for example primary health practice sites for
NURS 5337and high-acuity settings forNURS 5354. - An affiliation agreement, or a path to one. UTA requires an agreement with the clinical agency before you can do clinicals there, and some sites want their own written contract. See affiliation agreements.
- The right state. A site beyond your home state means writing to NursingSOA@uta.edu before the search starts there, and holding an RN license that state recognizes.
- Employer limits, if it's your workplace. A site where you work is fine when it matches the course's clinical focus, provided the rotation sits outside your own department and your preceptor is someone other than your current supervisor.
- Compliance in order. Items in the Compliance tile should read Approved, not Expiring or Expired, because UTA can deny a placement for noncompliance.
- A preceptor ready to sign. UTA's Preceptor Agreement carries each preceptor's signature and must be in the Clinical Coordinator's hands no later than your first clinical shift.
After you submit
- ReviewYour preceptor and site go before the Clinical Coordinator, course faculty or both. No review timeline is public, so leave plenty of room before the Wishlist closes. What reviewers look at is covered on coordinator approval.
- AgreementsUTA and the agency need a signed affiliation agreement, and your preceptor's signed Preceptor Agreement has to land with the Clinical Coordinator on or before the opening day of the clinical experience. See the Preceptor Agreement page.
- Clearance timingThe background check and drug test belong inside the 30-day window ahead of your first clinical course, which puts them after the request, near the end.
- HoursOnce the preceptor and site are approved and the agreements are done, your clinical time goes into Exxat's timesheets and logbooks.
A request can also be denied for reasons outside your preceptor's control. Under UTA's clearance policy, when an agency declines a student who holds a vaccine exemption, the self-placement request is denied and the course slides to the next semester. If you hold an exemption, ask early whether your site will accept it.
If there's no one to put on the request
UTA does help when the search stalls. The Department of Graduate Nursing offers assistance to students who are struggling to place, and a policy called Students Experiencing Difficulties with Clinical Placements is posted in Exxat. UTA's public pages don't describe how to ask or what the help includes; our placement assistance page covers what is known.

Questions UTA students ask
My first clinical course is more than a year away. Can I submit a request now?
Not yet. Exxat only shows a course's MyRequest within 12 months of its start date. You can still do the real work now: find a preceptor, confirm the site, and complete your Exxat profile with your work history and CV so it can go to the preceptors you approach. When the request appears, you will be ready to enter it.
Does a submitted MyRequest mean my placement is approved?
No. Submitting only puts your preceptor and site in front of UTA. The Clinical Coordinator and/or course faculty approve or decline them, an affiliation agreement with the site must be in place, and the preceptor still has to sign the Preceptor Agreement by your first clinical day. Wait for approval before you plan your first shift.
Can UTA choose a preceptor for me through MyRequest?
MyRequest is built for self-placement: you name the preceptor and site. UTA's separate commitment is to assist students who are having difficulty, under a policy posted in Exxat. If you have tried and come up empty, tell your clinical coordinator in writing, and do it well before the Wishlist closes so there is time to act.
Do DNP students use MyRequest?
The DNP has no preceptors, so there is nothing to request in the usual sense. What the DNP handbook asks for instead is the project site, logged in UTA's clinical management system before NURS 6323 ends so the university's legal staff can contract with it in time. Whether that entry uses MyRequest isn't stated; the Resources tile should say. More on the DNP project site.
What if my preceptor's clinic has never taken a UTA student?
Raise it before you submit. Your clinic needs an affiliation agreement with UTA, and a few sites want a separate written contract with the college as well. UTA's public pages don't say how long a new agreement takes or who starts it, so ask your clinical coordinator as soon as the clinic says yes, not when the Wishlist is about to close.
