Studying with UTA from New York
UTA's state map lists one nursing program for New York residents: the online RN-to-BSN. The Education and Administration MSNs, the nurse practitioner tracks and the DNP are not listed. New York also regulates out-of-state and online programs that place students in clinical rotations, so check with UTA before planning practice work there.

NYSED's rule for out-of-state and online programs
Nursing in New York is regulated by the Office of the Professions within the State Education Department, which also houses the State Board for Nursing. Per the office's FAQ, a nursing program that is online or based outside New York cannot put students into clinical rotations there until NYSED has registered or approved it, unless the setting is a federal Armed Forces or Veterans Administration facility.
NYSED's Office of College and University Evaluation adds that clinical placements in the licensed professions create a physical presence needing prior approval or an exemption from the Office of the Professions, even for out-of-state SARA institutions.
Our research did not establish whether UTA's RN-to-BSN is registered with NYSED, or whether NYSED would treat workplace and community assignments as clinical rotations. RN-to-BSN practice work in New York
Most of the work happens where you already are. NURS 3315 and NURS 4455 can be completed in your workplace, whether that is a unit at Northwell Health, NewYork-Presbyterian, Mount Sinai Health System, NYC Health + Hospitals or University of Rochester Medical Center.
UTA says NURS 3325 and NURS 4465 can be completed in the community. Public health settings, from the New York State Department of Health to local agencies in the New York City area, Buffalo, Rochester or Albany, are the kind of community setting these courses describe. The 7-week capstone, NURS 4685, asks you to choose management, clinical or education as your focus.

Your license: New York sits outside the compact
The Nurse Licensure Compact does not include New York, and the compact's own map lists no pending legislation that would bring it in. NYSED sends RNs licensed elsewhere to its checklist for a New York license, so a multistate license issued by Texas or another compact state does not cover nursing practice in New York.
UTA's RN-to-BSN requires an active, unencumbered RN license verifiable through Nursys or a board of nursing. Nurses already working in New York hold a New York license for this reason; if you are moving in, get one before planning practice work there. More on RN license rules for UTA clinicals.
If you're a UTA NP student moving to New York
UTA does not list New York for the NP tracks, NP certificates or the DNP, and its MSN handbook allows completion only in a state where the college can operate. Living or working in an unapproved state can mean delayed or denied placement, finishing clinicals in Texas or another approved state, withdrawal, or not graduating.
New York adds a layer for NP students. NYSED says the NP education program itself must be registered, and warns that rotations for a student in an unregistered NP program “could also be illegal”, outside federal VA and Armed Forces facilities. Questions UTA students ask
Can I take UTA's online RN-to-BSN while living in New York?
UTA's state map lists the RN-to-BSN for New York. Any nursing practice in New York needs a New York RN license, and NYSED requires out-of-state and online programs to be registered before placing students in clinical rotations. Ask NursingSOA@uta.edu how that rule applies to your practice courses.
Does a Texas multistate license let me do UTA practice work in New York?
No. New York has no compact membership and no joining bill pending, so no compact state's multistate license, Texas included, reaches practice there. NYSED points nurses licensed elsewhere to its checklist for getting a New York license.
Could I, as a UTA nurse practitioner student, do clinicals at a New York VA hospital?
NYSED's registration rule carves out federal facilities, meaning VA sites and U.S. Armed Forces sites, but that exemption is New York's, not UTA's. UTA's map does not list New York for the NP tracks, and its handbook limits completion to states where the college can operate. Only NursingSOA@uta.edu can say whether UTA would allow it.
Are UTA's Nursing Education and Administration MSNs open to New York residents?
Neither is listed for New York on UTA's map. UTA lists both for neighboring New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont, but your MyMav mailing address decides your state, and clinicals across a state line start with an email to UTA. Ask NursingSOA@uta.edu before you plan around a neighbor.
