Michigan students at UTA: two programs and a license question
Michigan residents can enroll in UTA's online RN-to-BSN or its Nursing Administration MSN, according to UTA's state map, but not in Nursing Education, the nurse practitioner tracks or the DNP. Michigan has not joined the Nurse Licensure Compact, so practice work in the state calls for a Michigan RN license. We did not come across any Michigan rule that makes a program from another state seek approval before clinicals start, although we did not contact the Board.

UTA's list for Michigan
UTA counts you as a Michigan student if your MyMav mailing address is in Michigan. Its state map, checked September 23, 2026, lists:

In Michigan, the license comes first
Michigan is not a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact; the compact's tracker lists a pending bill, HB 4246. Until that changes, Michigan does not recognize multistate licenses issued by Texas or other compact states. UTA's MSN handbook makes licensure mandatory in each state hosting your clinicals and puts the cost of a non-compact state's license on you.
Michigan's RN licensing guide sets requirements beyond the application form. Applicants must pass a criminal background check, take one-time human trafficking training on how to identify victims, and log 2 hours of implicit bias training in the 5 years before the license is issued. If you are moving to Michigan, start the application well before your first practicum course. RN license for clinicals covers UTA's side of the rule.
A Texas multistate license does not cover practice work in Michigan.
What Michigan's Board says about out-of-state programs
A program chartered outside Michigan does not, on the rules and guidance we reviewed, owe the Michigan Board of Nursing an approval request or a notice before its students begin clinicals in the state. The Board's program-approval rules, which begin at Mich. Admin. Code R 338.10301, and its Nursing Education Programs page are about programs located inside the state; when it comes to licensure, the Board accepts out-of-state programs on the strength of ACEN, CNEA or CCNE accreditation.
Not finding a rule is not the same as confirming there is none, and the Board was not contacted. Before you start an Administration practicum or RN-to-BSN assignment at a Michigan facility, check with NursingSOA@uta.edu whether anything applies.
Administration and RN-to-BSN work in Michigan
UTA's Administration practicum happens in healthcare facilities with senior nurse administrators on staff. Across the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, Grand Rapids, Lansing and Flint metros, large systems such as Henry Ford Health, Corewell Health, McLaren Health Care, University of Michigan Health and Trinity Health Michigan are the kind of organization that fits. They illustrate the setting only; this page does not claim any of them hosts UTA students. A 2015 UTA syllabus wanted Administration preceptors to hold a master's degree in nursing, health care administration or business administration, with exceptions weighed individually; the Administration MSN page explains how current that is.
RN-to-BSN students do their workplace courses on the job. For the community courses, local health agencies and Michigan's Department of Health and Human Services are one place to start looking; RN-to-BSN practice experiences has the course detail.
NP, DNP and Education students headed to Michigan
None of the NP tracks, the NP certificates, the DNP or the Education MSN is listed for Michigan. Because completion is limited to states where the college can operate, the MSN handbook warns that such a move can hold up or block your placement, send you to Texas or an approved state for clinicals, or end in withdrawal or no degree. AANP rates Michigan as restricted practice, with physician delegation required for NP controlled-substance prescribing, but that does not change UTA's map. Is Michigan joining the Nurse Licensure Compact?
Michigan is not a member. The compact's own tracker lists pending Michigan legislation, HB 4246, but a pending bill does not change anything for your practicum. Until Michigan enacts and implements the compact, UTA students doing practice work in Michigan need a Michigan RN license, and UTA's graduate handbook puts that cost on the student.
Does Michigan require UTA to get state approval before my practicum?
We reviewed the Michigan Board of Nursing's rules and guidance and saw no approval or notice requirement aimed at programs based outside Michigan. Its approval rules are written for Michigan-based programs. Because the Board was not contacted and rules can change, confirm with NursingSOA@uta.edu before you begin at a Michigan site.
Can I take UTA's MSN in Nursing Education from Michigan?
UTA's state map leaves Michigan off the Nursing Education list, along with the NP tracks and the DNP. Michigan residents can take the MSN in Nursing Administration or the RN-to-BSN. If you already study Nursing Education and plan to move to Michigan, email NursingSOA@uta.edu before you change your MyMav address.
Do Michigan preceptors get a state incentive for precepting?
Not for UTA students, on current information. The Michigan health department's Office of Nursing Programs ran a clinical preceptor pilot with Michigan State University that paid preceptors of MSU family and psychiatric NP students, and that pilot is listed as completed. We also found no Michigan preceptor tax credit that has been enacted.
