Indiana and UTA: what you can study and where the hours go
Indiana nurses can study UTA's online RN-to-BSN or either non-NP MSN, Nursing Education or Nursing Administration; every nurse practitioner track, NP certificate and the DNP is closed. Indiana's board does not accredit RN-to-BSN or graduate programs, and a multistate compact license covers practice here.

Your state, for UTA's purposes, is the one in your MyMav mailing address. For Indiana, the map reads like this:

One neighbor splits the list: Michigan appears for the RN-to-BSN and the Administration MSN, yet UTA leaves it off the Nursing Education map, which rules out a teaching practicum there.
Practice settings across Indiana
Among Indiana's health systems are Community Health Network and Parkview Health, along with Ascension St. Vincent, Indiana University Health and Franciscan Health; its population centers are the Indianapolis-Carmel-Greenwood and Fort Wayne metros plus Indiana's shares of the Chicago and Louisville metros. They illustrate the kinds of settings this work happens in; naming them says nothing about whether any system hosts UTA students.
Two RN-to-BSN courses, NURS 3315 and NURS 4455, are designed around your workplace; two more, NURS 3325 and NURS 4465, send you into the community, where the Indiana Department of Health is the state agency for public health. The Education MSN needs a NURS 5362 preceptor whose job is nursing education, such as a hospital educator or a faculty member. Administration practicums sit in facilities with senior nurse leaders on site, and the NURS 5340 practicum adds a community partnering project.
What Indiana's board does and does not regulate
The Indiana State Board of Nursing, part of the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency, accredits in-state programs whose graduates are heading for a first RN or LPN license. In its own words, RN-BSN programs and graduate level nursing programs of any kind are not ones it reviews or accredits. Our research found no board approval requirement for out-of-state RN-to-BSN or graduate programs placing students in Indiana, and the eligible-program rules in 848 IAC 1-2-4 cover pre-licensure programs only.
No board step does not mean no paperwork. UTA builds its clinical clearance rules into its affiliation agreements with clinical agencies, and an Indiana facility may add requirements of its own. Whether any other Indiana authority has a role is something to put to NursingSOA@uta.edu.
Your license in Indiana
Indiana's compact membership dates from July 1, 2020. So Indiana practice is covered, and UTA's handbook rule on being licensed in the clinical state is met, when your compact home state has issued you a multistate RN license. Nurses licensed only in a non-compact state would need an Indiana license at their own cost.
Border students should look at the map before the commute. The Indiana share of the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro sits beside Illinois, which is not a compact state, so a practicum across that line needs an Illinois license. Indiana's part of the Louisville metro borders Kentucky, a compact state. Either way, email NursingSOA@uta.edu before recruiting a preceptor over the border.
Indiana and UTA's nurse practitioner tracks
Indiana falls outside the seven states where UTA offers NP tracks, post-master's NP certificates and the DNP. UTA's older downloadable state table also recorded no determination on whether its NP curriculum meets Indiana licensure requirements. For an NP student who relocates here, the handbook's consequences include being required to return to Texas or another approved state for clinical courses, and at worst withdrawal and no degree.
Should you practice in Indiana later, AANP lists it as reduced practice, meaning a regulated collaborative agreement with a physician governs at least one element of NP practice.

Questions UTA students ask
Can I take UTA's online nurse practitioner program from Indiana?
No. The online NP tracks and post-master's NP certificates are listed for Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, New Mexico, Texas and Virginia only, and UTA goes by the mailing address in MyMav. An Indiana address leaves you the RN-to-BSN and the two non-NP MSNs to choose from.
Do I need an Indiana RN license for UTA clinical hours in Indiana?
Only if your current license does not cover Indiana. Because Indiana belongs to the compact, a multistate license issued by another member state already reaches it. A nurse whose only license comes from a non-compact state would need an Indiana license, paid for personally, before starting hours at an Indiana site.
Is a Chicago practicum possible if I live in Indiana's part of the Chicago metro?
Illinois is on UTA's map for Nursing Education, but crossing the line brings two extra steps. Illinois is outside the compact, so you would need an Illinois RN license, and Illinois applies a filing rule of its own to out-of-state programs, with unclear scope. Email NursingSOA@uta.edu before approaching a Chicago preceptor.
How many hours is UTA's RN-to-BSN practice work?
Our research of UTA's pages found no official hour count for the practice work in the four application courses or the NURS 4685 capstone. The only published figure is a 120-hour minimum for the optional co-op elective, NURS 3300. Check your course page in Canvas for what each assignment asks.
