Wyoming and UTA: the RN-to-BSN is the open door
Of UTA's nursing programs, only the online RN-to-BSN is listed for Wyoming on the university's state map. Its practice work needs no preceptor. Wyoming's Board of Nursing does not require its own approval for post-licensure programs, but it does want written word any time a student's clinical learning experience will take place in the state.

Wyoming is one of five states left off UTA's Administration list, alongside New York, Tennessee, Washington and Wisconsin.
Wyoming's Chapter 6 rules for out-of-state programs
The Wyoming State Board of Nursing's Chapter 6 rules ask three things of out-of-state programs. First, every out-of-state program needs a Wyoming Department of Education registration or else NC-SARA approval. Second, Board approval is waived for post-licensure programs, a category covering RN-to-BSN, MSN, DNP and APRN, yet each time one of their students has a clinical learning experience coming up in Wyoming, the program owes the Board written notice. And before clinicals start, the program must sign a written contract with the clinical facility and keep a copy for the Board.
Those are duties for the school, not for you. What this page cannot tell you is whether Wyoming treats UTA's RN-to-BSN workplace and community assignments as clinical learning experiences. Before you begin at a Wyoming facility, tell UTA's state authorization team at NursingSOA@uta.edu where you plan to work, and let UTA confirm whether notice or a facility contract is needed.
RN-to-BSN practice work in Wyoming
Your job carries NURS 3315 and NURS 4455, so the practical question is whether your employer will host the assignments. Among Wyoming's hospitals: Ivinson Memorial Hospital in Laramie, Sheridan Memorial Hospital, Campbell County Health in Gillette, Cheyenne Regional Medical Center and Banner Wyoming Medical Center in Casper.
The two community courses need a setting outside a hospital. Wyoming's population centers are small: the Cheyenne metro counted about 103,000 people in 2025 Census estimates, Casper about 81,000 and the Gillette micropolitan area about 48,000. In smaller communities it pays to pick your agency before each 5-week course opens; the Wyoming Department of Health is one public health option to consider. Your license in a compact state
It was January 19, 2018 when Wyoming implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact. Hold a multistate RN license from Wyoming, or from Texas or another compact state, and practice here is covered, which satisfies UTA's rule that you be licensed in any state where you do clinical work. Wyoming has also enacted the separate APRN Compact. It is not operating yet: it activates once seven states enact it, and as of 2026 the count is five: Utah, Wyoming, Delaware, North Dakota and South Dakota.
Graduate students relocating to Wyoming
Wyoming appears on none of UTA's graduate lists: not the NP tracks, the NP certificates, the DNP, Education or Administration. Graduate students who relocate here run into the MSN handbook's rule that a program can only be completed where the college can operate. Its list of possible outcomes is blunt: a placement held up or refused, being sent back to Texas or another approved state to do clinicals, withdrawal, or no degree.
Neighboring Colorado is one of UTA's seven NP states, but UTA judges your state by your MyMav address, and it wants border students to check with NursingSOA@uta.edu before they look for a preceptor across a state line. Do that before any move; out-of-state clinicals lists what to send.
Where we fit for Wyoming students
With only the RN-to-BSN open, there is no precepted UTA placement for us to arrange in Wyoming. If you are between nursing jobs or cannot find a community agency for NURS 3325 or NURS 4465, a placement advisor can look for settings near you, and UTA faculty decide whether the work meets the course. Can I do UTA's online RN-to-BSN from Casper or Cheyenne?
Yes, UTA's map lists the RN-to-BSN for Wyoming. The practice work is done at your workplace and in your community, with no preceptor to find. Because Wyoming wants a written heads-up to the Board from out-of-state programs whenever one of their students has a clinical learning experience there, let NursingSOA@uta.edu know which facility you plan to use.
Does Wyoming's Board have to approve UTA before I start?
Wyoming's Chapter 6 rules say post-licensure programs, including RN-to-BSN, do not need Board approval. UTA would still need Wyoming Department of Education registration or NC-SARA approval, written notice to the Board and a written contract with the facility. Whether those steps apply to your assignments is UTA's to confirm.
Does the APRN Compact let a UTA NP student do clinicals in Wyoming?
No. Wyoming has enacted the APRN Compact, but it is not operating until seven states enact it, and only five had as of 2026. Separately, UTA's map does not list Wyoming for any NP track or the DNP, which is the rule that decides where UTA clinicals can happen.
Is UTA's MSN in Nursing Administration open in Wyoming?
No. Wyoming is one of five states UTA's map leaves off the Administration list, and it is also off the Nursing Education list. If you are enrolled in either MSN and plan to move to Wyoming, email NursingSOA@uta.edu before the move, because UTA uses your MyMav mailing address as your state.
