UTA nursing programs and Tennessee
UTA's state-authorization map lists no nursing program for Tennessee: not the RN-to-BSN, not either non-NP MSN, not the NP tracks, post-master's NP certificates or DNP. Only Washington and Wisconsin share that status. If you live in Tennessee or are about to move there, talk to UTA before you apply or pack.

None of UTA's nursing programs is listed for Tennessee
Your location, as far as UTA is concerned, is the state in your MyMav mailing address. For Tennessee, the map (checked September 23, 2026) shows:

Our research found no UTA explanation for Tennessee's absence, and the map can change, so check it again before you make plans.
If you live in Tennessee and want to enroll
UTA's online program pages send prospective students to that map and warn that residents of certain states may not be able to enroll. A Tennessee mailing address matches no UTA nursing program on it today, including the RN-to-BSN, which elsewhere needs no preceptor at all.
A nurse at Erlanger, Covenant Health, Ballad Health, Vanderbilt University Medical Center or Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare could, in a listed state, do the NURS 3315 and NURS 4455 workplace assignments on the job; with a Tennessee address, the program is not on offer. Parts of the Memphis metro lie in Arkansas and Mississippi, and part of the Chattanooga metro in Georgia. If you actually live across that line, read the Arkansas or Georgia page, since UTA goes by your mailing address.
If you're a UTA student moving to Tennessee
For graduate students moving to Tennessee, the MSN and PMC handbook ties program completion to states where UTA's college of nursing is able to operate. Its list of what can happen to a student who lives, moves or works in an unapproved state:
- your graduation is delayed, or does not happen
- you are withdrawn from a course or the program
- you must return to Texas or another approved state to complete clinicals
- your clinical placement is denied or delayed
RN-to-BSN students face a parallel rule. UTA's online RN-to-BSN page says current students living in an ineligible state must get approval to keep going without interruption, and UTA does not promise it. Whatever your program, email NursingSOA@uta.edu before you accept a Tennessee job, travel contract or lease, not after your MyMav address changes.
Tennessee's board, compact status and rules
The Tennessee Board of Nursing licenses nurses in the state. Tennessee and Texas have both been compact states since January 19, 2018, so a Tennessee multistate license reaches Texas and a Texas multistate license reaches Tennessee. That settles licensing, not UTA eligibility: a valid license for Tennessee practice does not put Tennessee on UTA's map.
In AANP's ratings Tennessee is restricted, meaning physician supervision for NPs plus caps on Schedule II to IV prescribing and on opioid supply. Tennessee has not enacted the APRN Compact. Our research found no current Board rule in Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 1000-01 that expressly makes a program from another state obtain approval before sending students to clinicals.
A Tennessee bill awaiting confirmation
SB 2013/HB 1905 (short title: Tennessee Nursing Education Integrity and Oversight Act) would have the Board of Nursing stop, for two years, accepting or approving applications from nursing programs based outside Tennessee that want to operate, enroll students or place students for clinical experiences in the state. It does not separate pre-licensure, RN-to-BSN or APRN programs. It would require already-approved out-of-state programs to supply data such as preceptor lists and placement statistics, and would have the Tennessee Center for Nursing Advancement recommend new standards by June 30, 2027.
Whether the bill became law is unconfirmed: a secondary source reports an April 27, 2026 effective date, but official enactment was not verified, so treat it as unverified. It does not change UTA's map, which already lists nothing for Tennessee.

UTA lists no nursing program for Tennessee, so we plan with Tennessee-bound UTA students, before they move, for clinicals in a state UTA does list. Tennessee's preceptor incentive is closed to UTA students too: the Tennessee Hospital Association's Nurse Preceptor Incentive Program covers students in accredited Tennessee programs and in schools from Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky and Virginia completing hours in Tennessee. Texas programs are not on that list.

Questions UTA students ask
Can I enroll in UTA's online RN-to-BSN from Tennessee?
Not on UTA's current state map. The RN-to-BSN is missing for only three states, Tennessee, Washington and Wisconsin, and is listed everywhere else, DC included. Enrollment eligibility follows that map. If you believe your situation differs, ask UTA's state authorization team at NursingSOA@uta.edu before applying.
I'm a UTA FNP student taking a travel contract in Tennessee. Can I do clinicals there?
Tennessee is not on UTA's NP list, and the handbook limits program completion to states where UTA's nursing college can operate. It also requires you to email NursingSOA@uta.edu before accepting a travel assignment. One outcome the handbook names is having to complete clinicals in Texas or another approved state, so settle that before you sign.
Did Tennessee pass a law blocking out-of-state nursing programs?
Unconfirmed. SB 2013/HB 1905 would freeze, for two years, the Board's approvals of nursing programs from other states, and a secondary source reports an April 2026 effective date, but official enactment was not verified. UTA's map already lists no program for Tennessee, so the bill does not change your options with UTA today.
Does my Tennessee multistate license let me take a UTA program with clinicals in Texas?
Your multistate license covers practice in Texas and other compact states, since Tennessee and Texas both implemented the compact in January 2018. Licensing is only half of it, though. UTA decides eligibility by the state on your MyMav mailing address, and a Tennessee address is not listed for any UTA nursing program.
