UTA nursing from Nevada: start with your license
UTA's state map lists Nevada for the online RN-to-BSN and the MSN in Nursing Education or Nursing Administration, not for its NP tracks or DNP. The bigger Nevada issue is licensing. Nevada is a non-compact state, so for patient care your Texas multistate license, like one from any other state, stops at the Nevada line.

No compact, so a Nevada license comes first
On the compact's own map, Nevada is a non-member and has no legislation pending to join, so holding a Texas multistate RN license earns you no practice privilege in the state. A practice decision from the Nevada State Board of Nursing (NSBN) goes further. It requires a Nevada license of anyone practicing nursing or caring for patients who are in Nevada, and among the activities it names is nursing education that involves direct patient contact.
UTA's MSN handbook points the same way. You must be licensed in any state where you complete clinicals, and when that state is not compact you get its license at your own expense. If you live in Nevada but hold only a Texas or other compact license, start the NSBN application before you ask anyone to precept you. UTA's license checks are described on RN license for clinicals.
Nevada's rule for out-of-state programs has an unclear reach
Nevada's rule for programs based elsewhere is NAC 632.703, triggered once any part of a nursing program takes place in Nevada. The program then owes the board a report on the board's own form, backed by accreditation or approval proof, a showing that it follows Nevada's nursing law, and school reports every year. For a program taught over the internet, Nevada clinical instruction waits on board approval, and its faculty teaching in Nevada need Nevada licenses.
Nothing in the rule distinguishes graduate, post-licensure and pre-licensure programs. A September 1, 2026 update of the board's list shows five out-of-state schools cleared for their clinical portion alone. All five run pre-licensure ADN or BSN programs; UTA does not appear. Whether that matters for a UTA Education or Administration practicum is a question for UTA's state authorization team at NursingSOA@uta.edu.
Where precepted clinicals do go ahead, a 2005 NSBN practice decision sets the terms: faculty direct every student clinical experience, the preceptor stays on site and never has more than two students at the same time, and orientation and written objectives for preceptors come from the program.
Las Vegas, Reno and the practicum settings
Southern Nevada is the population center. Some 2.4 million people lived in the Las Vegas-Henderson-North Las Vegas area in 2025, the Census Bureau estimates, compared with about 579,000 in Reno and under 60,000 in Carson City. The large systems include The Valley Health System, run by a subsidiary of Universal Health Services; Sunrise Health System, part of HCA Healthcare; University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, the academic medical center; Dignity Health's Las Vegas and Henderson hospitals; and Renown Health.
Read those as examples of where Education and Administration practicums and RN-to-BSN workplace assignments tend to happen, not as sites that have agreed to host UTA students. For the community courses, local health programs and Nevada's Division of Public and Behavioral Health illustrate the kind of public health setting involved.
Once your license and UTA's state answer are settled, a placement advisor can look for an Education or Administration preceptor in Las Vegas or Reno and help you gather what UTA reviews. Whether that preceptor and site are acceptable is UTA's call.
Moving to Nevada during a UTA NP track
Nevada is not on UTA's NP or DNP list, and the MSN handbook limits program completion to a state “in which CONHI can operate.” A student who relocates to Las Vegas or Reno mid-track risks what the handbook spells out: placements delayed or refused, clinicals moved back to Texas or another approved state, or leaving the program without graduating. Email NursingSOA@uta.edu before the move or a travel contract, not after your MyMav address changes.
Licensing adds a second barrier, since your compact license would not reach Nevada. AANP lists Nevada as full practice, with one limit: an NP with under two years, or under 2,000 hours, of clinical experience may prescribe Schedule II drugs only under a physician-approved protocol. California, to the west, is one of UTA's seven NP states.
Questions UTA students ask
Can I use my Texas compact license for UTA practicum hours in Nevada?
No. Nevada is not in the Nurse Licensure Compact, and an NSBN practice decision treats hands-on patient care during nursing education like any other care given in Nevada: it needs a Nevada license. UTA's handbook adds that you obtain a license for a non-compact clinical state at your own expense.
Has the Nevada board approved UTA for clinicals?
UTA is not on the board's September 2026 list of out-of-state schools approved for only their clinical portion; all five schools on it are pre-licensure programs. NAC 632.703 does not say whether post-licensure and graduate programs need the same approval, so ask NursingSOA@uta.edu how UTA handles Nevada for your program.
Can I take UTA's FNP program while living in Las Vegas?
Not with a Nevada mailing address in MyMav. UTA's NP programs reach seven states, from California to Virginia, and Nevada sits outside that group. The RN-to-BSN and the Education and Administration MSNs are the UTA options open to Nevada residents.
How many students can a Nevada preceptor supervise at once?
Two at once, under a 2005 NSBN practice decision, and the preceptor has to be physically on site. Faculty must direct all student clinical experiences, and the program must give preceptors an orientation and written objectives. A hospital educator already precepting another school's student may have limited room.
