UTA nursing from Massachusetts: three open programs and a licensing wrinkle
UTA's state map lists Massachusetts for the online RN-to-BSN and both of UTA's non-NP master's programs, Nursing Education and Nursing Administration, but not for the nurse practitioner tracks, post-master's NP certificates or DNP. The detail most likely to trip you up is licensing: Massachusetts has enacted the Nurse Licensure Compact, yet its Board says the compact is not in effect.

What UTA's map lists for Massachusetts
UTA goes by the mailing address on your MyMav record. Its map data, checked in September 2026, reads like this for Massachusetts:

The compact is law in Massachusetts, but not yet in force
Massachusetts passed its Nurse Licensure Compact law in November 2024. The Board of Registration in Nursing says it does not take effect until implementation is finished, and is aiming for May 2027 after conditional approval for FBI background checks arrived in May 2026. NCSBN's table still shows TBD.
Until then, no multistate license, from Texas or any other compact state, lets you practice in Massachusetts. UTA's MSN handbook wants you licensed in each state where your clinical hours happen, paid for yourself when the compact does not apply. A NURS 5362 or Administration practicum at a Massachusetts site therefore needs a Massachusetts RN license.

The Board's rule for out-of-state programs, and its limits
244 CMR 6.03(2) applies when a nursing program's parent institution is outside Massachusetts: its clinical learning experiences in the state need Board approval. Part A covers the institution, renewed annually with a six-month lead before the first placement. Part B is per placement, due 30 days or more ahead, with changes due two weeks before the start; nobody begins until the Board's approval letter arrives.
Scope is the unsettled part. The Board's criteria are written for programs whose graduates sit for the NCLEX-RN or NCLEX-PN; that page never mentions post-licensure RN-to-BSN or graduate programs, the only UTA options open to you here. Whether any of it reaches your practicum is for UTA's state authorization team to answer.

Practicum settings in Greater Boston, Worcester and Springfield
Census estimates for 2025 count 5,034,221 people in the Boston-Cambridge-Newton metro, 4,575,101 of them in Massachusetts. Worcester has 888,502, Springfield 464,338, and 593,640 live in the Massachusetts part of the Providence-Warwick area. Large systems include Beth Israel Lahey Health, Baystate Health, Mass General Brigham, UMass Memorial Health and Boston Medical Center Health System: examples of where Education and Administration students look, not sites with UTA agreements.
For NURS 5362, UTA wants a preceptor whose job is nursing education, based in a hospital, clinic or academic setting. Administration hours are spent with senior nurse leaders, and UTA's RN-to-MSN page says a site other than your employer is preferred for NURS 5339.
RN-to-BSN students need no preceptor. For the community courses, NURS 3325 and NURS 4465, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health is the state agency to start from.
Moving here in the middle of a UTA NP track
In Massachusetts, NPs reach full practice after two years of work supervised by a qualifying APRN or physician, but UTA's map leaves the state off for NP, post-master's NP and DNP students. The MSN handbook limits program completion to states where CONHI can operate.
A move here can stall or block your placement, force you to come to Texas or another approved state for the clinical courses, end in withdrawal or push back graduation. Neighbors Rhode Island and New Hampshire share metro areas with Massachusetts but are not UTA NP states either.

Questions UTA students ask
Can I use my Texas compact license for UTA practicum hours in Massachusetts?
Not at this point. The state passed the Nurse Licensure Compact in November 2024, yet its Board of Registration in Nursing treats it as inactive until implementation is done and is targeting May 2027. In the meantime, practicing there takes a Massachusetts RN license, and UTA requires a license valid in the state where your clinical hours happen.
Can I enroll in UTA's online FNP program if I live in Massachusetts?
No. UTA's state-authorization map lists the nurse practitioner tracks and post-master's NP certificates in seven states only: Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, New Mexico, Texas and Virginia. Massachusetts is not among them, and UTA reads your state from your MyMav mailing address. The RN-to-BSN and both non-NP MSNs remain open to you.
Does Massachusetts require Board approval before a UTA Education practicum starts?
The state's out-of-state rule, 244 CMR 6.03(2), says programs based elsewhere need the Board to approve their clinical placements. The Board frames it around programs that prepare graduates for the NCLEX, though, and does not address post-licensure or graduate programs. Ask NursingSOA@uta.edu how UTA handles Massachusetts before you commit to a start date.
Can I do RN-to-BSN practice work at my Massachusetts hospital job?
For two courses, yes. UTA says the practice experiences in NURS 3315 and NURS 4455 can be completed in the workplace, while NURS 3325 and NURS 4465 are completed in the community. UTA publishes no hour counts for these courses, and none of them needs a preceptor.
