Maryland students at UTA: the programs, the credit and the limits
Maryland rewards some preceptors with an income tax credit, but only those who precept NP students, and UTA's NP tracks and DNP are closed to Maryland residents. What you can take from here is UTA's online RN-to-BSN or an MSN in Nursing Education or Nursing Administration, and the credit does not cover those programs' preceptors.

UTA's programs for a Maryland address
The address that counts is the mailing address in MyMav, and Maryland's row on UTA's map reads:

The Washington area splits the map. The District of Columbia is listed for the same three programs as Maryland, while Virginia, next door, appears on UTA's NP and DNP list as well.
Where Maryland students do the work
Luminis Health, LifeBridge Health, MedStar Health, Johns Hopkins Medicine and the University of Maryland Medical System are among Maryland's health systems. Its largest metros are Baltimore-Columbia-Towson and Maryland's share of the Washington area, with Lexington Park and Maryland's part of Hagerstown-Martinsburg much smaller. Their names illustrate settings only; none is presented as a UTA clinical site.
RN-to-BSN students complete NURS 3325, Holistic Care of the Older Adult, in the community, and the Maryland Department of Health, the state's public health agency, also identifies the workforce shortage areas used by the tax credit below. Education students reach NURS 5362 only after every other course, with a 3.0 GPA, then need a preceptor who works in nursing education. Maryland's NP preceptor tax credit, and who it leaves out
Under Tax-General §10-739, the Nurse Practitioner Preceptorship Tax Credit lets an NP or licensed physician claim an income tax credit for serving, unpaid, as preceptor to NP students in a preceptorship the Board of Nursing has approved. To qualify, a preceptor completes at least three rotations of 90 or more hours of community-based clinical training in an area the Maryland Department of Health identifies as having a health care workforce shortage. The credit is set per rotation with an annual cap per preceptor, total credits are capped each year, and the statute stays in force until June 30, 2030.
The program is defined for NP students in a nursing program recognized by the State Board of Nursing, and our research did not show whether out-of-state programs' students qualify. For UTA's Maryland students the point is moot: the NP tracks are closed here, and Education and Administration preceptors fall outside the credit.
Out-of-state program rules and your license
We found no Maryland Board of Nursing requirement that a program from another state get approval before its students train in Maryland; the board's education page raises out-of-state programs only as a licensure matter. Because the board's main site was unreachable from our location (geo-blocked), the check used its health.maryland.gov pages instead. The Maryland Higher Education Commission requires out-of-state institutions to register before enrolling Maryland students online, but not institutions approved to take part in SARA. Confirm with UTA's state authorization team if either bears on your course.
Maryland has recognized the compact since January 19, 2018, and COMAR 10.27.01.03(B) lets a nurse with a multistate privilege practice here in line with Maryland law, which satisfies UTA's license rule. The RN license page walks through what UTA verifies.
A UTA NP student's move to Maryland
Maryland is absent from UTA's NP and DNP list. Move here mid-track and UTA may delay or deny your placement, require clinicals back in Texas or another approved state, or withdraw you, and graduation can slip or fall through. Questions UTA students ask
Does Maryland's APRN student exemption let me do UTA NP clinicals there?
No. Maryland's Nurse Practice Act exempts students in accredited graduate APRN programs from licensure while they practice in the program, but that is a licensing rule. Where UTA runs its NP tracks is UTA's decision, and its map lists them for seven states that do not include Maryland.
Can I do UTA practicum hours in Washington, DC while living in Maryland?
The District is on UTA's map for both non-NP MSNs, so it is possible in principle. Two checks come first. Email NursingSOA@uta.edu, as the handbook requires before any out-of-state preceptor search, and make sure your license is valid in the District. Settle both before approaching anyone there.
Could I get licensed as an NP in Maryland after finishing UTA's program elsewhere?
Every NP program gets Board review and approval before its graduates are certified as advanced practice nurses, according to the Maryland Board of Nursing, and a school not on its list submits the Program Approval Form. Our research did not check whether UTA's NP programs are on that list, so ask the board before you plan a move.
Can my UTA Education preceptor in Maryland claim the preceptor tax credit?
No. The credit covers only NPs and licensed physicians precepting NP students, and it requires three rotations of 90 or more hours of community-based clinical training in a workforce shortage area. A nurse educator precepting a UTA Nursing Education student is outside that definition, whatever the setting.
