Taking UTA nursing courses from Kansas
Kansas is a state where the board's own rules are light but UTA's map still decides. With a Kansas address, the UTA programs open to you are the online RN-to-BSN and the Education and Administration MSNs. UTA's NP tracks, post-master's certificates and DNP stay closed to Kansas addresses.

KSBN asks little of out-of-state programs
An out-of-state online APRN program needs no formal approval from the Kansas State Board of Nursing (KSBN) before Kansans sign up, the board says. KSBN looks at such a program later, at the point one of its graduates seeks a Kansas APRN license. The KSBN documents in our research describe no clinical-placement approval process for out-of-state undergraduate programs, RN-to-BSN included.
The rest of the guidance is similarly light. Faculty who teach online do not need a Kansas license, and Kansas does not require faculty to visit students during clinicals; faculty who do visit come as visitors. In APRN clinicals, KSBN expects three things of the preceptor: an orientation, a signed agreement, and a Kansas APRN license in the student's role.
None of this overrides UTA. A relaxed board does not put the NP tracks on UTA's map, and for the open programs UTA's state authorization team at NursingSOA@uta.edu is still the one to confirm a Kansas practicum.
Wichita, Topeka and the Kansas side of Kansas City
The Census Bureau's 2025 estimate counts about 938,000 people in the Kansas part of the Kansas City metro, which crosses into Missouri. Wichita follows at about 664,000, then Topeka and Manhattan. Our research turned up four large systems: Wesley Healthcare (HCA's Wichita group), Ascension Via Christi, Stormont Vail Health and The University of Kansas Health System.
Naming them does not mean any has agreed to take UTA students; they show the settings, a hospital educator or a senior nurse leader, where Education and Administration practicums happen. RN-to-BSN workplace assignments stay at your job, and for community work the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and county health departments represent the public health side. A site on the Missouri side of Kansas City is in another state, so the NursingSOA@uta.edu email applies.

Licensing for Kansas practicums
The Nurse Licensure Compact has applied in Kansas since July 1, 2019. A multistate license issued by Texas, Kansas or any other member state lets you log practicum hours in Kansas without a second license. Per KSBN, APRN students working in Kansas clinical settings do so on an RN license Kansas accepts, which can be a multistate license or a Kansas single-state one. Kansas has not enacted the APRN Compact. Under UTA's handbook the license must cover the state of the practicum; the license page walks through UTA's check.
UTA NP students and Kansas, during the program and after
During the program, Kansas is off UTA's NP and DNP list, and the MSN handbook allows program completion only in states where CONHI can operate. A mid-track move can delay or deny placement, send your clinicals back to Texas or another approved state, or end in withdrawal or not graduating. Email NursingSOA@uta.edu before the move.
After graduation, KSBN checks an APRN applicant's program for at least three credit hours each of advanced pharmacology, health assessment and pathophysiology, at least 45 credit hours, national accreditation, and role-specialty clinical hours: 500 for students admitted before March 1, 2025, and 750 for students admitted after. UTA's FNP lists 720 clinical hours, so anyone aiming for a Kansas license should put the transcript question to KSBN directly. AANP rates Kansas full practice. Questions UTA students ask
Does Kansas require approval for out-of-state online nursing programs like UTA's?
Not before you enroll, according to KSBN: online APRN programs from other states face no formal approval step, and the board reviews them only when a graduate applies for licensure. Its documents describe no placement approval for RN-to-BSN programs either. UTA's own map still controls what you can take: RN-to-BSN and both non-NP MSNs, not the NP tracks or DNP.
Will a UTA FNP meet Kansas's 750-hour APRN licensing check?
For anyone admitted after March 1, 2025, KSBN's checklist sets 750 role-specialty clinical hours. UTA's FNP lists 720 hours across NURS 5337, NURS 5338 and NURS 5660. Only KSBN can say how it evaluates a particular transcript, so contact the board before you count on a Kansas APRN license.
Can I do a UTA practicum on the Missouri side of Kansas City?
Missouri is on UTA's map for the RN-to-BSN and both non-NP MSNs, and it is a compact state. The MSN handbook still requires an email to NursingSOA@uta.edu before you seek a preceptor in another state, and it names students near a state border specifically. Send that email before you contact a Missouri site.
Will UTA faculty visit my Kansas practicum site?
Kansas does not require it. According to KSBN, faculty have no obligation to see students at clinical sites, and any who come do so as visitors or lay persons; online faculty also need no Kansas license. How UTA oversees your practicum is set by your course, so ask your course faculty what contact to expect.
