Taking UTA nursing courses from Connecticut
With a Connecticut address in MyMav, UTA's map opens the online RN-to-BSN, the MSN in Nursing Education and the MSN in Nursing Administration to you, but not the NP tracks, post-master's NP certificates or DNP. Connecticut's Nurse Licensure Compact participation began October 1, 2025, and that shifts the license question for practicum hours there.

Licensing changed on October 1, 2025
October 1, 2025 was Connecticut's first day in the Nurse Licensure Compact. For students, the Department of Public Health spells out what changed: an RN student may practice in Connecticut holding either a Connecticut RN license or the multistate license of whichever compact state is home.
That lines up with UTA's MSN handbook, which requires a license in whatever state your clinical hours happen and makes you get that state's license yourself when the compact does not reach it. How Connecticut treats nursing programs from other states
Connecticut's Board of Examiners for Nursing is part of the Department of Public Health. The deemed-approval rule is Regs. Conn. State Agencies 20-90-59. A program based in another state counts as “deemed approved” if the board in its home state has approved it, if it follows Connecticut's RN curriculum rule, and if its home state sets licensure standards comparable to Connecticut's or higher. Connecticut's rule mentions no separate application or notice.
Such programs must still follow Connecticut's written-contract rules and ratios under 20-90-48: one clinical faculty member per 10 students in direct client care, one preceptor per two students, one faculty member per 16 precepted students. Preceptors of advanced-level students in RN education programs need a bachelor's in nursing and two years in the role (20-90-51(f)); UTA's own published minimum is one year.
Every one of these provisions sits in rules for programs that prepare graduates for licensure, and none addresses post-licensure or APRN programs. Read them as background and let UTA's state authorization team say whether any apply to you.
Where Connecticut practicums happen
Census estimates for 2025 put Hartford-West Hartford-East Hartford at 1,171,426 people, Bridgeport-Stamford-Danbury at 978,179, New Haven at 578,741 and Waterbury-Shelton at 463,349. Western Connecticut's former Nuvance hospitals, Danbury Hospital included, are now run by Northwell Health of New York; across the rest of the state, the employers to know are Yale New Haven Health, Hartford HealthCare, Trinity Health Of New England and UConn Health. We name them as examples, not as sites that take UTA students.
An Education preceptor must work in nursing education; the Administration courses place you with senior nurse leaders. RN-to-BSN students need no preceptor, and their community assignments can draw on programs run by the Department of Public Health, the same department that houses the Board. If your job is over the line, note that UTA lists New York for RN-to-BSN but for neither MSN.

Relocating to Connecticut during a UTA NP track
A Connecticut NP reaches full practice only with three years and 2,000 hours of physician collaboration behind them. The more pressing point for a UTA student is that the NP tracks and DNP are not listed here at all. The handbook says completion “may only occur in a state in which CONHI can operate” and warns that you could be told to come to Texas, or go to another approved state, for clinicals; that placement could be denied or delayed; or that you could be withdrawn or graduate late. Questions UTA students ask
Do I need a Connecticut RN license for a UTA practicum in Connecticut?
Not necessarily, since October 1, 2025, when Connecticut began participating in the Nurse Licensure Compact. A student's home-state multistate license now works in Connecticut, the Department of Public Health says, as does a Connecticut license. UTA's own rule is that your license must be valid wherever your clinical hours take place.
Is UTA's DNP open to Connecticut residents?
No. UTA's state map lists the Doctor of Nursing Practice for Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, New Mexico, Texas and Virginia only, the same seven states as the NP tracks and post-master's NP certificates. With a Connecticut address, your UTA options are the RN-to-BSN, MSN Nursing Education and MSN Nursing Administration.
Does Connecticut make UTA file anything before my practicum?
Connecticut's regulations deem an out-of-state program approved when two things hold (its home board approves it, and it meets Connecticut's standards), and they name no separate filing. Those rules are written for programs leading to licensure, though, and do not address post-licensure programs like UTA's. NursingSOA@uta.edu can tell you how UTA handles Connecticut.
Can my UTA Administration practicum be at a New York hospital if I live in Connecticut?
Check before you ask the hospital. UTA's map does not list New York for MSN Nursing Administration or MSN Nursing Education, and the handbook only lets you complete the program in a state where CONHI can operate. It also covers border students: email NursingSOA@uta.edu before you look for a preceptor in another state.
