UTA online nursing for Louisiana residents
Three of UTA's online programs take Louisiana residents: the RN-to-BSN, and the MSN with a Nursing Education or Nursing Administration focus. UTA's map shows no NP track, post-master's NP certificate or DNP for Louisiana. Louisiana's board also sets a detailed rule for out-of-state nursing programs, with filings due six months before an offering starts.

What UTA offers with a Louisiana address
UTA sorts students by the state in their MyMav mailing address. Its map data, checked September 23, 2026, lists Louisiana this way:

Louisiana's rule: six months' notice and in-state faculty licenses
LAC 46:XLVII.3539 is the Louisiana regulation for nursing programs, undergraduate or graduate, that are administratively controlled from another state. Before one of them can run courses or clinical experiences inside Louisiana, the Louisiana State Board of Nursing has to approve it. The program writes a request letter naming each clinical agency and unit, and sends it six months or more before the offering begins, together with the curriculum and syllabi, the catalog, faculty qualification forms, exam pass data and a clinical facility survey form.
Three credentials are prerequisites: approval from the home state, regional accreditation, and national nursing accreditation the board recognizes. An approval has a maximum life of three years, with renewal by petition. Each faculty member teaching in Louisiana needs a current Louisiana-issued RN or APRN license, a nursing graduate degree and clinical nursing practice of two years or more.
After approval, graduate students' placements go on the board's clinical experience spreadsheet within two weeks after the experience starts. Our sources do not show whether UTA holds this approval, so ask NursingSOA@uta.edu before you line up a Louisiana site, and ask a full term ahead rather than weeks before.

New Orleans, Baton Rouge and the practicum settings
Louisiana has several mid-sized metros rather than one dominant one. The Census Bureau's 2025 estimates put New Orleans-Metairie at about 971,000 people, Baton Rouge at about 889,000, Lafayette at about 424,000 and Shreveport-Bossier City at about 383,000. Large systems include Ochsner Health, LCMC Health, FMOL Health (the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System), Willis-Knighton Health and Baton Rouge General.
Those systems illustrate where an Education preceptor or a senior nurse leader for Administration might work; they are examples, not confirmed UTA placement sites. RN-to-BSN community work points toward public health settings such as the Office of Public Health within the Louisiana Department of Health, while workplace assignments happen where you already work.
Louisiana rewards a plan made early, and that is how we work. Once UTA confirms Louisiana for your MSN course, a placement advisor looks near you for an Education or Administration preceptor, tells them about the weekly faculty contact Louisiana expects, and assembles the file UTA reviews so it arrives complete. UTA makes the final call on preceptor and site.
Licensing: Louisiana joined the compact in 2019
July 1, 2019 brought Louisiana into the compact, so your unencumbered Texas multistate RN license also works for practicum hours in Louisiana. UTA's MSN handbook requires a license valid where you complete clinicals, and any extra license a non-compact situation calls for is at your own expense.
Louisiana's stricter license demand falls on faculty rather than students, as the rule above shows. Louisiana has not enacted the APRN Compact, which is not yet in operation anywhere. RN license for clinicals covers the UTA side of license checks.
If you're a UTA NP student relocating to Louisiana
Louisiana sits outside UTA's NP and DNP map, and UTA's handbook ties completion of a program to states where its nursing college is able to operate. A mid-program move to New Orleans or Baton Rouge could leave you without a placement, force a return to Texas or another approved state to finish clinicals, or end in withdrawal before graduation. Before a move, a New Orleans travel contract or a preceptor search across the state line, contact NursingSOA@uta.edu.
Louisiana's own terms for APRN students would apply on top: filings six months ahead, Louisiana-licensed faculty, weekly faculty contact with preceptor and student, and a faculty-to-APRN-student ratio no higher than 1:9 per clinical day. AANP rates Louisiana reduced practice, requiring a collaborative agreement with a physician. Texas and Arkansas border Louisiana and are both on UTA's NP list; out-of-state clinicals covers the rest.
Questions UTA students ask
Does UTA need Louisiana board approval before I do a practicum there?
Louisiana's rule requires out-of-state undergraduate and graduate nursing programs to get board approval before offering courses or clinical experiences in the state, filed six months ahead. UTA's status with the board is not confirmed in our sources. UTA's map lists Louisiana for your program, so ask NursingSOA@uta.edu how that applies before you recruit a preceptor.
Is UTA's nurse practitioner program open to Louisiana residents?
Not while your MyMav address is in Louisiana. The seven states where UTA's NP programs, NP certificates and DNP run include just two of Louisiana's neighbors, Texas and Arkansas. Living near the Texas line does not change that, because UTA goes by the state in your mailing address.
Who needs a Louisiana license for a UTA practicum in Louisiana?
You need an unencumbered license valid in Louisiana, which a multistate compact license provides. The tougher requirement under LAC 46:XLVII.3539 is on faculty: anyone from an out-of-state program teaching in Louisiana must have a current Louisiana RN or APRN license, a graduate nursing degree and two years of clinical practice.
How often will UTA faculty contact my Louisiana preceptor?
Louisiana's rule sets a minimum for precepted clinicals: faculty from the program talk with preceptor and student every week or more often, and get to the site once a semester or quarter at minimum. Tell a prospective Education or Administration preceptor to expect that contact, and check with your course faculty how UTA meets it.
