Alaska and UTA's online nursing programs
With an Alaska mailing address in MyMav, you are eligible for UTA's online RN-to-BSN and for its Education and Administration MSNs, while the NP tracks, NP certificates and DNP are not open to you. Alaska sits outside the Nurse Licensure Compact, and its Board makes each APRN student from an outside program register individually before clinical work.

Alaska registers APRN students one at a time
Alaska regulates the student, not the school. According to the Board's FAQ, APRN students have to apply to the Alaska Board of Nursing for a preceptorship. What 12 AAC 44.460 sets up is a registration of the individual student, covering clinical practice for an out-of-state APRN course of study; the program itself is not being approved.
Form 08-4253, the APRN Preceptorship Registration, carries a non-refundable fee. Applicants supply proof of current APRN enrollment, an RN license in good standing issued by Alaska or any other state, and a copy of the school-facility-student-preceptor agreement. Registration runs 12 months, or to the end of the preceptorship if that is sooner, with one renewal allowed. The preceptor needs an active, unencumbered APRN or physician license or privilege in a comparable practice focus.
For UTA students the registration is moot for now, because UTA's map doesn't list Alaska for any NP track.
What Alaska asks of RN-to-BSN and MSN students
For RN-to-BS distance students, the Board's FAQ lists just two requirements: enrollment in a nationally accredited nursing program with state approval where it is based, and a current, unencumbered RN license in a U.S. state or territory. No program approval step is mentioned.
We found no separate Alaska rule for non-APRN graduate students, which is where UTA's Education and Administration MSN students fall. Treat that as unconfirmed rather than as permission, and check your practicum plan with UTA's state authorization team before you approach a preceptor.
Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau
Alaska's major hospital systems include Providence Alaska Medical Center, run by the state's largest hospital operator; the Alaska Native Medical Center, a tribal health system in Anchorage; Alaska Regional Hospital, owned by HCA Healthcare; Foundation Health Partners, which runs Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and the Tanana Valley Clinic; and, in Palmer, Mat-Su Regional Medical Center. The Anchorage metro holds about 406,000 people, Fairbanks-College about 94,000 and the Juneau area about 31,600.
An Education student needs a preceptor working in nursing education for NURS 5362; an Administration student works alongside senior nurse leaders in a healthcare facility. RN-to-BSN community work draws on the Alaska Department of Health's Division of Public Health. Naming a system here says nothing about whether it takes UTA students. Licensing in a state outside the compact
Alaska has not joined the Nurse Licensure Compact (the FAQ below covers pending bills), so a multistate license from Texas or elsewhere gives you no privilege in Alaska. UTA's handbook wants you licensed in whichever state hosts your clinical work, at your own expense outside the compact, which makes an Alaska RN license the requirement for Alaska practice work. UTA NP students and an Alaska move
If you're in a UTA NP track or the DNP, Alaska is off UTA's map, whatever the Board's registration process allows. The handbook covers exactly this case: a UTA program can only be finished in a state where the nursing college is able to operate, and students in unlisted states can face delayed graduation, withdrawal, clinicals back in Texas or another listed state, or a stalled placement.

Alaska is a practicum-only state for us: Education and Administration students can ask us to look for a fitting nurse educator or nurse leader and to help assemble the packet UTA reviews. NP searches here are off the table until UTA's map changes, and UTA has the final word on every preceptor and site; share your course and start date.
Questions UTA students ask
Can I register with the Alaska Board to do UTA NP clinicals there?
The registration exists for students of APRN programs based outside Alaska, but it doesn't help a UTA student at present. UTA's map lists NP tracks only for Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, New Mexico, Texas and Virginia, and UTA, not Alaska, decides where its students may train. Ask NursingSOA@uta.edu before filing anything with Alaska.
Do UTA RN-to-BSN students in Alaska need an Alaska license?
The Alaska Board accepts an RN license from any U.S. state or territory for RN-to-BS distance students, and UTA's catalog asks for an unencumbered U.S. RN license. Because Alaska is outside the compact, though, working as an RN in Alaska already requires an Alaska license, and your RN-to-BSN practice assignments happen at that job or in your community.
Is Alaska joining the Nurse Licensure Compact?
Not yet. The Alaska Board's compact page says the legislature has not passed legislation to join and shows HB 131 and SB 124 still pending for the 2025-2026 session. Assume any clinical work in Alaska needs an Alaska license until one of them passes and takes effect, and check the Board's page for changes.
Does my UTA faculty member need an Alaska nursing license?
Possibly. Under 12 AAC 44.090(h), faculty of an out-of-state program with students in Alaska rotations need an Alaska RN license once grading time for that clinical coursework, added to any other nursing education or consultation they do in Alaska, goes past 20 working days within one licensing period. Tracking that is UTA's job; you don't need to arrange it.
